The Department of Law and Legislative Affairs is one of the important segment of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and presently being housed at Ist Floor, Vindhyachal Bhawan, Arera Hills, Bhopal 462004. Amongst other functions allocated to this department under the Madhya Pradesh Government Business (Allocation) Rules, the department is more importantly engaged in the functions such as tendering legal advice on variety of issues referred to by various departments of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and also performing consultative role in regard to proposals for legislation, framing of statutory rules/regulations, notifications, Byelaws and Finalisation of important Memorandum of Understandings, Agreement, Deeds etc.
This department is also vested with the responsibility of preparation of panels of Advocates in respect of the Supreme Court of India, M.P. High Court, District Courts, Arbitration Tribunal and appointment of advocates out of such panels to defend interest of the various departments of the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
This department, in the capacity of administrative department of the District Courts is also engaged in the supervision and monitoring of the execution of various plan/non-plan schemes in respect of district courts, this includes the construction of district court buildings at different places as well as residential quarters of Judicial Officers under Central Sponsored Scheme in the State of Madhya Pradesh. This department is also mandated with the authority of appointment of Notaries and also maintaining relevant record in this regard by the relevant Act.
This department is also entrusted with the administration of Law Officers including Advocate General and their Law Officers, Government Pleader/Additional Government Pleader and payment of Retainership and remuneration to them in civil and criminal cases, and reviewing their fee structure from time to time. The Amicus curie appointed by the various courts are also entitled to receive payment as per rules from this department.
